Evaluating English Accents WorldWide Results: NORWAY

Norwegian Personality Trait Means
University of Bergen; 20 students

14 female, 6 male; mean age 21.6
(collected by Bjarne Vandeskog)

This sample is smaller than all others reported on this site. However, the results generally mirror patterns seen in other samples, so it is likely to be a reasonable approximation.

Accent Guesses

Points to Note:

  • The General American and UK voices were both accurately identified by a high proportion of the sample.
  • Somewhat similarly to the British and Irish samples, Norwegian students' accuracy in identifying an accent as Antipodean (espeically NZ) was high. However, their ability to differentiate between AusE and NZE was low.
  • There is very little variation in the evaluation of speakers on power, status, and competence, with the American and UK male being viewed slightly more positively on status.
  • The female General American was most liked on solidarity, the NZ male doing most poorly.
