Accent Guesses

Points to Note:

  • The only voices correctly identified by more than a quarter of respondents were the two American voices. In contrast, the Australian accent was poorly identified, even though Australia is physically much closer to Indonesia than the US.
  • This may be an effect of television media on accent identification. Respondents watched predominantly American english-language television, helping them identify the American accents.
  • The two UK voices, and the NZ male were clear losers on most personality traits.
  • The greatest amount of variation in the personality traits was for solidarity, with the American female the clear winner.
  • The lack of variation in traits other than solidarity may be due to relatively consistent perceived status of English speakers.
