Accent Guesses

Points to Note:

  • In general, guesses for each voice covered a wide spectrum of answers, with "American" seemingly the focal point (note that "American" here includes "Black American" guesses). A majority or plurality of the students thought that the two AusE and the two NZE voices were "American".
  • The American voices were identified correctly by approximately two-thirds of the sample.
  • The two English voices were the only two not identified as "American", with the male English voice being correctly identified by 23% of the sample.
  • The female North American voice was the clear leader for solidarity and competence traits.
  • The UK female was downrated on most traits relative to the other voices, but was joined for solidarity variables by the UK Male.
